5Following the Schwarzbein Principal works!  Sep 15, 2008
I've been following the Schwarzbein program for almost a month and, almost from Day 1, I have more energy and absolutely no craving for sweets or chocolate, my lifelong temptations(I am 70). I have also lost about 5 pounds. Most of all, I believe that this time I'll actually reach my goal of losing all excess weight. I know this will take time and discipline plus continued exercising (I lap swim and work out at Curves 3 times a week), but I have never felt more satisfied with an eating program. It took me over 2 weeks to rid my shelves and refrigerator of food I could no longer eat and to stock up on the things I could eat, but it has been well worth the effort. I like the program so much that my recent purchase of the Principle book and cookbook was a gift for a friend with high cholesterol. I originally happened to find my own books at a garage sale, in late July. I have also tried and enjoyed using several recipes from both the basic cookbook and the vegetarian cookbooks. Most of my meals are pretty basic though because they take less preparation time that way. An added benefit is that I am only counting carbs at each meal or snack, plus I make sure I eat from each of the 4 categories Dr. Schwarzbein mentions. In the past I've tried many plans, from Atkins to South Beach to low fat and have often spent enormous amounts of time figuring calories, fat, carbs, fiber, and protein. With this plan, I simply have the right foods on hand (and only plan dinners for each week). For other meals and snacks I choose what is on hand, attentive to maintaining the balance called for by the author.
Even when I've occasionally eaten something not recommended, I've gone right back to eating what is listed and I continue to lose weight and feel healthy. No longer am I napping in the afternoon, although I am definitely tired and ready for bed at the end of the day. I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants better overall health and energy, plus clear, well-documented information.

5Well worth the money  Jun 02, 2008
This book incorporates Diane's 'get healthy' regimen with fabulous recipes. She was the inspiration for Suzanne Sommers' cookbooks/health books, too - which are also quite good. I have bought this as a gift for many of my friends. I use it more than any other cookbook I have.

5The best cookbook I've ever owned  May 26, 2008
I consider a cookbook a keeper if there are six or more recipes that I use or want to use. In this book there are at least 20, and I haven't tried them all. What I love about this cookbook is that there are a variety of ethnic tastes - everything from simple steak and chicken to Indian, Mediterranean, and Moroccan flavors. I agree with another reviewer who said the book was worth it for the salad dressing recipes alone. All the ingredients are fresh and unprocessed, and make the dishes tastes like restaurant food. The Schwarzbein Principle diet does not limit the amount of fat you eat, so this cookbook is not for the low-fat dieter. I've been eating the Schwarzbein principle way for 2 months and my health has improved dramatically. If you haven't yet bought the Schwarzbein Principle book, make sure you buy the most current one, called "The Program." A lot has changed since the earlier books, and she's reversed her stance on things, such as using 2% dairy products instead of full-fat ones.

5My favorite cookbook  Mar 28, 2008
Of course, it helps to be cooking with butter and cream, but this IS an excellent cookbook. I have been using it for several months for all meals, especially dinners. The recipes are simple and have been consistently delicious. I am just starting to cook serious meals regularly, and this cookbook is easy to follow. As with most kitchens, we have a shelf full of cookbooks. I use this book most of the time, but occasionally supplement with How to Cook Without a Book and Real Vegetarian Thai (when I want something spicy). The Schwarzbein Principle is a great program and this is a great cookbook; well organized and packed with wonderful recipes.
